Here is what we know.
Europe has decided to improve its security level to avoid any further problems with terrorism and illegal migration.
Starting in 2021, any American citizens traveling to the European Schengen zone will need to apply for ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorization System) visa. This includes minors traveling on their own passports.
Once issued, the ETIAS visa will be good for 3 years. And since it is a multi-entry visa, during that time you can enter in and out of any of the Schengen zone as much as you wish.
Right now, those going to the region for a stay of 90 days or shorter do not need a visa. This will change in 2021 when every American citizen traveling to Europe will need this new visa.
How to apply
Applying for the ETIAS visa is simple. You will be able to apply online thru a secure online platform. American citizens will need to have a valid passport, a credit or debit card, and an email account. These are the main ETIAS requirements for US citizens which each applicant must have on hand when applying. Without the right travel document, the applicant could be denied access.
When enrolling in the ETIAS database which is the same as applying for the Europe visa, the passport used must be valid for 3 months beyond the period of intended stay of each person and it is possible that passports over 10 years old may not be accepted as a valid travel document. Once you apply and are processed, you will be notified by email of acceptance or refusal. If for some reason it is refused, you will have 96 hours to submit additional documents if requested.
We are unsure of the cost but have been told that it will be inexpensive for US travelers. Once I know more you will hear it here first. You can read more about the new ETIAS visa at https://www.etiasvisa.com/etias-requirements/americans
